Al married Cris, a reading teacher, in the summer of 1977. They have two children, Lucy Grace who is a kindergarten teacher in South Portland Maine and an ardent equestrian. Their son, Joel Lincoln is a college student and a passionate skier. They have two pets, Bandit the cat who is an accomplished "Mouser" and their dog, Bailey, an enthusiastic hole digger.
Al's sailing career started 32 years ago when he realized he needed to do something with his life. Al says, "So far it has worked out pretty well." He went on to graduate from Maine Maritime Academy in 1970 and after graduation he worked for the University of Miami as a First Assistant on research ships for 3 years. In September of 1976 Al worked for the Military Sealift Command until he joined ASC in 1977. His first assignment was as a Second Assistant on the M/V Sam Laud.
In his spare time, Al enjoys reading, puttering, and napping. Al and his family enjoy spending time together and they love their summer home in Popham Beach.
Al says his favorite spots include Disney World and the Yacht Club but Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia would have to be a close second.
Al says, "Because I enjoy it!"
"My most memorable moment with ASC is January 14, 2008, the day of the M/V Walter J. McCarthy Jr. incident, and the challenges that resulted from that day. My most recent accomplishments include raising the M/V Walter J. McCarthy Jr. while watching my wife build our new summer home in Popham Beach."
Al approaches all tasks with an extraordinary level of engineering expertise, personal interest and strong leadership. His personal dedication to his assigned vessel, his fellow officers, and crew and to his company is truly unparalleled. Al, and his strong leadership of the Walter J. McCarthy Jr.'s superb crew of dedicated engineering staff, was critical to the very timely return of the ship to service following the unfortunate engine room flood casualty of January, 2008.
