Profession Steward Assistant, M/V St. Clair.
August 2010
Jim was born and raised in the small town of Manistique, Michigan located on the north shore of Lake Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. His love of being on the water sparked his interest in his sailing career. After high school, Jim enlisted in the US Navy, where he served for four years. Following his US Navy service, Jim joined the Merchant Marines, where he sailed both deep sea and on the Great Lakes. Jim became an employee of American Steamship Company in 1997, with his first position as Wiper. He earned seniority as a Porter in July of 1999. Jim has sailed on several of ASC’s vessels over his 13 year career with the Company. While working on the M/V St. Clair, he has held positions in all three departments – Deck, Engine and Galley, currently holding the position of Steward Assistant.
Jim Beaudry’s hobbies include music (a classic rock fan), swimming and reading (with special interest given to historical books). One of his most recent accomplishments includes reading “The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire”. Upon his retirement in August, 2010, Jim plans to work for a hometown friend who owns a record shop in Manistique.
Jim picks scenic Mackinac Island as his favorite vacation spot. “It can be very peaceful and it’s like stepping back in time.” Mackinac Island boasts a Victorian image, with transportation only by horse and buggy, bicycle or walking.
Jim says, “I enjoy my job and being around my shipmates!” And we can tell that his shipmates enjoy being around Jim, as well. Here are a few comments by crew members of the M/V St. Clair regarding Jim’s nomination.
“Jim Beaudry is an employee anyone would want working for them. He works hard, is self-motivated and does the extra things that make his Outstanding Mariner Award well deserved. He is a considerate and intelligent person.”
“Jim is always there for his shipmates to help or have a kind word whenever he can. Jim’s day never starts at 0630 hours; you can find Jim up at the wee hours of the morning making sure the galley is spotless and his shipmates have what they need for the upcoming day.”
“Jim has always gone the extra mile to make life more comfortable for others and never complains what is expected of him.”
Leadership – Teamwork – Pride – the rewards of hard work, dedication, going the extra mile! These are the attributes that represent Jim Beaudry’s Company Standard.
