Bob, the seventh of nine children, grew up in Arcadia, Michigan and lived there until 2003 when he moved to Frankfort, Michigan. Bob has been married to his best friend Mary Ann for 35 years. They have a daughter Renee, a son-in-law Jeff and two amazing grandsons, Austin, 9 years and Andrew 5 years. Bob enjoys spending his shore-time with his daughter and family, and traveling with Mary Ann.
In 1981, the company Bob worked for moved out of state. Bob's mother-in-law, who worked at the Seafarers International Union hall in the port of Frankfort, Michigan, recommended that he give sailing a try. He took her advice and has been sailing ever since. Bob began his American Steamship Company career that year on the M/V American Republic as a Wiper. In his subsequent 27 years of service, Bob has worked on several ASC vessels in the position of Wiper, Conveyorman, and Deck/Engine/Utility Person. Bob says, "I have continued to sail because it has always been a good and secure job. I have met a lot of people who are now good friends. Most of all, I enjoy my job!
"My most memorable moment has been receiving this award. There have been a lot of good times sailing but this is number one! I feel honored to be receiving this award, as I know many others who are deserving of this award. I take pride in the job that I do and have enjoyed making new friends in the years that I have been employed at American Steamship Company. I look forward to the times I have left until my retirement."
Bob started biking in the 1980's and enjoyed riding with some friends who had motorcycles. Then, his brothers obtained bikes and today they all ride together. This year Bob was able to purchase his dream bike - a HARLEY!
Bob has proven to be an asset and valuable employee throughout his many years of service to the company. Bob's attitude is positive toward safety, maintenance and the well being of the crew and the vessel at all times. He is always willing and able to work with all crewmembers. Bob has the type of personality that makes him a leader of men. The rewards of hard work and dedication are leadership, teamwork, and pride. These are the building components that represent Bob Manke's company standard.
